Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections (PRP)

What is PRP? A form of regenerative medicine, PRP injections involves drawing a small quantity of the patient’s blood, then isolating and concentrating the healing platelets.  A Sports Medicine provider then injects the concentrated plasma into a carefully chosen location near the injury.  They are commonly used to treat sports injuries to help proliferate cellular healing and increase healing time.

The procedure isolates naturally occurring plasma in your blood. Plasma is the liquid part of your blood that’s mostly made of water and proteins. Functionally, plasma allows the red and white blood cells and platelets to move through your bloodstream.

To collect the plasma for the procedure, a specialist will draw blood and then use a machine to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. The area of the injection will be numbed with a topical treatment, once numb the plasma will be injected into the treatment area.

While there are a number of ways to relieve knee discomfort and pain.  Viscosupplementation has been found to be effective at significantly reducing pain or improving function.

Once the area is evaluated, the specialist will decide if the affected area needs to be aspirated (remove the excess fluid) before injecting the hyaluronic acid. Typically, The aspiration will be performed by injecting a needle into the affected joint, followed by the hyaluronic acid injection.
